Göscheneralp dam and reservoir in the Swiss Alps
Göscheneralp: a reservoir destination reached by a mountain road above Göschenen.

Make water the destination: compare roads to Göscheneralp, Lac d’Estaing, Emosson, Moiry and Grande Dixence, plus the reservoir-lined northern approach to Grimsel. Five lead towards a lake or dam destination; Grimsel continues to a mountain pass.

6 selected routes, from 9.6 km to 26.3 km, with 686 m to 1,639 m of elevation gain.

Choose the start, not just the lake

Lac d’Estaing starts in Argelès-Gazost; Moiry uses the saved approach from Zinal. Grande Dixence starts much lower in Sion. These profiles measure different lengths of access road, so compare the named starts before interpreting the elevation totals.

Grimsel is the pass option

The northern Grimsel profile starts in Innertkirchen and climbs through a landscape shaped by reservoirs before reaching the pass. It offers a different endpoint from the out-and-back lake and dam roads in this selection.

Road endpoints and time off the bike

A climb profile ends on its recorded road. It does not include a walk across a dam, a lakeside trail, a visitor attraction or a boat trip. Plan any visit separately and check local road access before travelling.

Average gradient describes the recorded route as a whole. Open a climb to see its elevation profile and how the gradient changes along the road.
