The stacked hairpin bends on the Prato side of Passo dello Stelvio
The Prato side of Stelvio. The Bormio approach follows a different road to the same pass.

Follow the bends: two sides of Stelvio, the road out of Sa Calobra, Trollstigen and the steep climb from Masca. These five approaches share winding roads, but differ greatly in length, gradient and setting.

Compare the climbs

5 selected routes, from 3.8 km to 24.6 km, with 430 m to 1,886 m of elevation gain.

Two versions of Stelvio

Prato offers the famous stacked switchbacks on the northeastern side. Bormio approaches from the southwest through a different sequence of bends and galleries. Compare their separate profiles before choosing a base; they are alternatives, not consecutive parts of one climb.

Sa Calobra and Masca

The Sa Calobra profile climbs from the port to Coll dels Reis; a ride from elsewhere on Mallorca also includes reaching the top and descending to the start. Masca is on Tenerife: its short climb to Mirador de Cherfe is much steeper on average and belongs to a separate trip.

Trollstigen and road access

Trollstigen winds up eleven hairpin bends in Norway. This collection describes the roads, not their present opening status: mountain closures and access restrictions can change. Check the road authority before travel, and allow room for other traffic through the bends.

Average gradient describes the recorded route as a whole. Open a climb to see its elevation profile and how the gradient changes along the road.
